About Material

Material is the South African movie industry’s latest offering. The film Material stars South Africa’s premier ‘funny man’ Riaad Moosa and an ensemble cast the likes of which have never been seen on SA shores before. The movie is sure to have you rolling in the isles as one comedian after the other play their roles in this inspirational and heart-warming motion picture.

Material was shot in and around the historically significant suburb of Fordsburg, and the movie is in its final stage of editing. The release date for Material is the 17th of February 2012. The movie celebrates the depth of South Africa’s spirit as well as the legacy of this unique part of South Africa. Riaad Moosa plays the lead role in the movie alongside Vincent Ebrahim of The Kumars at No.42 fame, who came out from London to play the character of Riaad’s father, so impressed was he with the screenplay. The film is a big endorsement and a testimony to an inspired and compelling screenplay which was the main attraction for Ebrahim. He brings all of his experience to the table and with that, increases the film’s credibility.

Material is not a Bollywood film, but a modern-day Indian story along the lines of Bend it like Beckham. The screenplay was written by Craig Freimond with help from Riaad and is produced by Tom Pictures.

The storyline is biographical in nature as we follow the life of Cassim Kaif (Moosa). He is a young Muslim man working in his father’s fabric shop in Fordsburg, Johannesburg. The family expects him to take over the family business one day and this is a fate he has resigned himself to. Unexpectedly and through some misadventure he finds himself at an open-mike night at a local comedy club.

He discovers a hidden talent for comedy and his passion for it is ignited. He knows that following the path of comedy will force him to turn his back on his responsibility, his family and the community. The family has to grapple with universal issues like identity, responsibility and duty, thereby making the film realistic and convincing in its portrayal of a Muslim family unit. Most families will be able to relate to the characters and plot. This movie, which is appropriate for all, emphasises the importance of family. Both South African and international audiences alike will fall in love with Material.
